The easiest way to go green with our energy use is to simply reduce our consumption. Instead of adding megawatts, let’s focus on “negawatts” - cutting our usage through conscious energy management.

I’m all for clean energy. I think solar panels are sweet, and wind turbines are über cool. The problem for me is the cost. While it may make sense for some people to add these to their house, for most of us, they’re simply out of the question. Our budget doesn’t include ten or twenty thousand dollars for future energy costs.

Cris Bisch says:

For those that have never heard of a negawatt, it is "a measure of the avoided use or the conservation of a unit of energy...The cheapest watt of energy is the one that is never used" - Seed Magazine ("The Watt That is Not"). Thanks Derek, for sharing on ecochildsplay.com your simple solutions for conserving energy; good advice for all of us to apply. During the winter months, when the sun goes down at our house, we close our drapes and blinds to hold the heat in and keep the chill out. We also sleep in a cool room with more blankets on hand, should the temperature really drop during the night. Our thermostat is typically set between 66-68 degrees; extra warmth is generated by our very efficient propane stove and layering our clothes for fluctuations in temperature throughout the day.
