What it sounds like

The Huffington Post reported today that a Saudi Islamic scholar has warned his students not to drive ethanol powered cars because the their reliance on alcohol to run contradicts the Muslim rule to avoid alcohol.

The scholar stopped short of issuing a fatwa, saying instead that this was his recommendation and that further dialog on the issue was required.

Biodiesel isn't okay either then, because it requires methanol, a wood alcohol, for processing.

Reading the article, it looks like he comes to his conclusion based on the fact that ethanol is the same type of alcohol humans can drink, whereas methanol would kill anyone who tried to consume it. Just my take though.

Wait, he's Saudi. American ethanol competes with Saudi crude oil. KSA also imports a lot of their grain from America. Is this resource nationalism or national survival?
