NOT SAFE, EVEN WITH NEW LINER!

I do not trust this company. The bottles have a chemical liner and the company does not disclose the composition. Some bottles contain the old copper-colored liner which contains BPA, as the company admitted recently. The newer bottles have a different liner, but the company again does not disclose the composition and when I purchased my bottle, after thorough washing, I could detect a weird taste in the water. If the new lining is truly non-toxic, then the company should come clean and reveal the composition. I do not trust that the new liner is any better than the old. I bought mine directly from the SIGG website and their 30-day return policy is a joke (only store credit, $5 restocking fee per item, $10 if it has been used, plus of course you pay for shipping). So now I am stuck with a possibly toxic bottle that I cannot use. I recommend you buy stainless steel bottles like those from Klean Kanteen, which even SIGG's research posted on their website showed that they do not leach anything toxic.

"SIGG finally admits there was BPA in their Aluminum", seems correct wording.

SIGG has been hugely popular especially since the Nalgine's BPA incident. It was over-blown together with the current green push.
Understandably, SIGG was afraid of the same could happen to them. Secretly the company changed its lining material a year ago and they bought some time until they had to become clear. Why it took so long? Well, it doesn't seem to be " Good corporate responsibility" to me.

I would stick with my stainless filter bottle.

Sigg Announces Bottles Prior to 2008 had BPA in lining

While Sigg previously answered questions about what its bottles' lining were made of with "that's proprietary", Sigg announced today that its bottles made prior to August 2008 DID have trace amounts of BPA. Good corporate responsibility. http://www.treehugger.com/files/2009/08/sigg-bottles-now-bpa-free.php

Eye Candy...For Your Water!!!

I have used SIGG water bottles for years and they always amaze me with their new ideas for products. This line of Maharadsha bottles is so cool!! The colors are vibrant and eye-catching.
I use mine hiking, gardening, playing at the park, and all day at work. I cant tell you how many times ive dropped my SIGG, and other than a few little dings, its holding up through the abuse. I also feel much safer knowing that when I leave it in my car, I wont be poisoned by leached plastic next time I drink from it.
Actually, after my daughter's teacher commented on how cool my SIGG was, I decided to give her one as a thank you at the end of this school year....perfect gift!!!
Buy a SIGG, I know you'll enjoy it as much as I have!

Don't Buy SIGG

I had my SIGG for about 6 months and the liner started to wear and flake off around the thread area (Where the cap screws in). I guess it was due to the wear and tear of opening and closing the cap. Look closely around your thread area and ensure that none of the aluminum is exposed. The lining is yellow. If you see any silver, that’s aluminum. Aluminum, if leached into the water, can cause Alzheimer's disease. I have switched to a Laken bottle and it does not have this problem. See how they solved it at www.laken.es.

As Good as it gets

The Swiss-made Sigg Thermos is as good as it gets.

Petite and double-walled, my mini thermos goes with me everywhere. Its streamlined body never leaks, complains or asks "Are we there yet?" Light enough to carry around in a purse, it's a water bottle and thermos in one. The top unscrews to reveal a little compartment, perfect to carry a tea bag or pills around.

Pretty enough on the outside to satisfy even the most discriminating fashionista, this bottle is more than just a pretty face.

Made out of stainless steel and high quality rubber says its good for your inner eco-consciousness as well. The wide mouth makes it easy to clean, keeping it free of bacteria and flavors that previous drinks can impart to other bottles. Extensively tested to insure the safety of the materials, this thermos handles fizzy drinks too!

Available in the Bay Area at: Elephant Pharmacy. Fantasia Coffee & Tea (Santana Row, San Jose) also offers some amazingly similar (Taiwanese) knockoffs at a fraction of the price.

Two sizes (250 & 380 ml) and 2 different colors/finishes every season.

What is epoxy resin?

My concern about the Sigg water bottle is the lining. I have read that it has an "epoxy resin" lining. The information from the company says that it is microthin. What is epoxy resin and do you want your water sitting in it before drinking it? What do they mean by plant based material.? Not all plants are safe. What plants are they using? If it is biodegradable does that mean it is safe? If it is so thin, how do I know that it won't flake off. I believe there is no lining made and applied by man that will not break down and eventually leech into the water. Extreme heat (like bottles left in cars in the summer) and cold must have some effect on the lining. The only materials I would feel comfortable with are glass and stainless steel. There are different grades of stainless steel What grade of stainless steel is the Klean Kanteen? The stainless steel made in China is not the same grade that was made in the U.S. 30 years ago. I can't tell you what the materials are that make up stainless steel, but I do know in some consumer products, the Chinese put in just enough of the ingredient that lets it pass as stainless. Thus the lower price. It's about the money and not the safety to the consumer. I don't think we have any good information now to make an informed decision on the water bottle. In my opionion, the only safe vessel is glass at this point. If someone knows of a water bottle that has been tested for all material and has no doubt of its safety, I'd be interested in buying it. I see some valid concerns about both the Sigg and the Klean Kanteen on these blogs.

Considering to Buy Myself a Sigg!

I currently have a CamelBak bottle, and I just read many reviews on stainless steel water bottles. For those of you doubting the "secret lining" of SIGG water bottles, here's a message from the SIGG President. Maybe it's convincing enough?

Steve Wasik
President, SIGG USA

One of the reasons SIGG is the world leader in the manufacturing of premium water bottles is because of our proprietary bottle liner. This special liner is a water-based, non-toxic polymer which has been perfected over decades of Swiss craftsmanship. Like Coca-Cola's soft drink recipe, the SIGG liner formula remains secret and unavailable to third parties in order to protect our competitive advantage. The Swiss have confirmed to me the following information which may be of interest to you:
1. The SIGG bottle liner meets and exceeds requirements outlined by the USA FDA regulations (175.300). The liner is micro thin and still allows for the bottle to be 100% recyclable.
2. Due to the finish/porosity of the liner, SIGGs outperform polycarbonate #7 and other plastic materials at reducing bacteria build-up and ease of cleaning.
3. The SIGG bottle liner is totally inert because it is baked on at extremely high temperatures (over 200 degrees Celsius). The liner is flexible and remains intact and fully functioning no matter how dented the outside of the bottle becomes.
4. SIGGs are safe to be placed in the dishwasher with no harm to the liner. In addition, SIGG's liner protects from any migration or leaching of the liner & container into the liquid. All tests of the liquid reveal no trace (0 %) of any of the following chemicals: Perfluorooctanoic Acid (PFOA), Bysphenol A (BPA)

Sigg seems the best alternative

Sigg with the very high European safety standards seemed the best water bottle option. I ruled out Nalgene and Kleen Kanteen (couldn't get past 'responsibly' made in China) . Yes it's a little heaver than plastic and it doesn't have insulation - In Maryland the heat is intensive - but I just keep it with me in the office and refill with the filtered water there. I bought some for family members and we all loved the designs. I only use water so cleaning is not a problem. You can use interchange different types of drinking tops depending on your use. I'll order more and will keep a cooler in the car. We have to adapt to be healthy and safe!

Love it, but ...

I carry my sig bottle everywhere. I have a slot in most of my purses/bags for it.

Here are some pros:
Keeps drinks cold
Environmentally friendly (better than recycling plastic)
Looks great
Very durable, lasts forever (had mine for 3 years and still no leaks)
No leaks

Here are some cons:
Sweats a bit with a cold drink inside
Heavier than a plastic water bottle
Travels with you (can recycle a plastic bottle)
Not dishwasher safe (but not too hard to clean if you have the Sigg brush)

SIGG Water Bottles Almost Rock

SIGG designs are eye catching, and I really appreciate the various sizes. But if you are concerned about plastic leeching, the tops of these bottles are still made out of plastic so that seems to defeat the purpose to me. They are also pretty pricey and somewhat hard to clean. I really like the way they look and I like the fact that they don't change the flavor of water at all, but I probably won't buy another one.

Not great for bicycling

I bought a Sigg bottle so I could avoid plastic, but now a year later I find that I rarely use it. I like that it's cute and nontoxic and doesn't get stinky, but it's got a few inconvenient drawbacks for cycling. The strange kind of sport top is a bit hard to use and lets only a small amount of liquid out at a time. The first time it fell on the pavement the protective cover over the mouthpiece broke in pieces, and subsequent falls saw it get dented and lose paint. Also, it rattles in my metal bottle cage unless I put a sock or bandana around it. I'm afraid I'm back to riding with a plastic water bottle :-(

Sigg Rocks!

I ran across this product line before they were into full blown advertising mode. Awesome concept and great product. They have many options in design, shape, spout/lid. I got one for everyone in immediate family and DARE them to not use them. The only drawback is the basic line is not insulated and living in the terrarium called, Florida, sometimes begs for a bit of insulation in a water bottle!

Easy to use. Easy to clean (they have perfect bottle brushes on their site!). Easy on the enviornment! Why would you want to drink mystery water from plastic when you can always have your own filtered (for SURE) water in a reusable - not to mention - funky & cool water bottle?!?! You wouldn't & shouldn't!

Love it!

The fact that this bottle is made of a metal and not plastic is its #1 perk. It doesn't leach chemicals into your drink and it does not hold flavors or germs like plastic (even the re-usable plastic bottles) does. Its durable and the top has a loop that can be used to hang on a backpack or bag with a caribiner. The aluminum is lightweight when empty. It gets extra cold in the fridge too! The Sigg bottle is seriously my favorite water bottle purchase ever!

Very close to perfect

Cool graphics, recyclable at the end of it's useful life, made in Europe which has high environmental standards, rather than China which has low standards, lining is tested as inert. There is a lot to like about Sigg.
The lining is supposed to be an epoxy, (it is proprietary, so it is hard to find out too much.) There are some people that are concerned that epoxies have bad chemicals in them, and how do we know the Sigg formula is better. The bottles have been tested, but depending on how stringently you apply the precautionary principal to your own life, you might want to consider this info.

I love them and use them.

Looks good, tastes great

I feel good bringing my Sigg bottle to meetings and other events as it looks professional and demonstrates how easy it is to eliminate disposable cups. The improvement I'd like to make to the model I have would be attaching the bottle cap to the bottle. Some stores sell Sigg brand narrow brushes and tablets to help you keep the bottle clean, but I haven't tried these yet as I keep only water in my Sigg. I found my bottle on sale at reusablebags.com.

Big difference, small opening

I think these Sigg water bottles are great. My only complaint, and it is a pretty small one, is that it is hard to clean. Yes, you can put it in the dishwasher but that opening is just a bit too small to allow you tell if it is properly cleaned. Other than that, I think mine is great. I have taken it all over and while it shows a bit of wear, it still does the job.

Love my SIGG's!

I have a few SIGG's and love them! The water tastes like it should (no metal taste). I prefer the SIGG screw top (the one with the hole that you could attach to a carabiner). I had a 'active' style top, but I could never get it to work right. My son has a kid's sized bottle with the kid's top. I took off the cover because It kinda got in the way, but the twist to open lid works great! Oh and I love the new styles of SIGG's for the spring 2008... so cute!

Mixed Results

We have several SIGGs which we have enjoyed. They have been the type with the hole on top that you can hold by putting your finger through. For my children for their sports, I picked up the type that have the pop over top and then you 'unscrew' the lid to drink. One of my children dropped his bottle on a wooden floor after just the 2nd or 3rd use, and the plastic on the lid broke off even though it was closed and there wasn't really a hard edge to make it break. I was really disappointed that it broke so easily - especially since it was a relatively expensive purchase.

Sigg aluminum bottles are the best!

With a choice of tops, Sigg bottles automatically beat out the competition. Since they're aluminum, there's no plastic to leach into your beverage. And there are many nifty designs to choose from.
