Bakery specializing in morning pastries, artisan breads and gourmet pizzas.
Address map 1331 9th AveSome of my favorite items at Arizmendi are:
1: Corn-Cherry Scones: Tart from the cherries with mealy corn texture and a sugar sprinkle.
2: Pizza: Especially the Shiitake, Portobello and Button Mushrooms, Sesame-Ginger-Garlic Vinaigrette. They're all great it just depends on what you like.
3: Kookie Brittle: Almond and chocolate-chip bar cookie. One of SF Magazine's 125 best things to eat.
The employees at the cooperative are positive and provide a great start to you day. You can't go wrong on any item and it's feels great to support a local worker-owned business.

It almost seems silly to write a review of Arizmendi: Just go there.
Arizmendi sprung from the Cheese Board which started making pizzas about 20 years ago using dough from its famous baguettes, I believe. There's one variety a day. Always organic vegetarian with some delicious cheese and vegetables.
You can bake it at home or get it ready made.
Seek it out.
Arizmendi is in a couple of locations in Oakland and one in SF. The Cheese Board is in Berkeley.
The pizza is the same at all, with a different daily variety of course.

I look forward to my morning free trade coffee and oat scone at Arizmendi bakery on 9th Avenue in San Francisco's Sunset District. It's a worker owned collective of really vibrant creative bakers. There is something about the positivity of a worker owned business that somehow mysteriously transmits even through the humblest of Arizmendi's products- even a simple cup of coffee and oat scone energize me with a hope for a brighter, more socially progressive future.
