music, food and the environment
ACL's commitment to the environment was evident on my first visit to Austin, so 3.5 stars. A solar panel array was set up in one field - in the hot, hot sun, surely each stage roof could be covered in panels to power the fancy laser light shows. Local food vendors, with some organic options - wow (I've never seen that in Chicago). Hands down favorite was the 'children of the kettle corn' organic kettle corn - slightly sweet and salty and oh so good, they couldn't keep up with the lines. Unfortunately the owner only makes this treat at festivals, so if anyone can convince her to start a retail outpost, I'll be first to place my order!
ACL asked vendors to limit packaging, but gave away paper fans. There were recycling bins for plastic bottles, but not paper? They had a 'green' tent and incentives for picking up recyclables. Great to see so many bikes parked outside the gates, but why aren't the Metro buses green? or run past 9pm on Sunday?
