A was so psyched when I found this bookstore (I think originally through abebooks.com). They don't just sell new and used books. They are committed to funding literacy and minimizing environmental impact, among other things. Shipping is FREE in the USA. Not only that, they have what they describe as "an e-commerce first: the Carbon Neutral Shopping Cart". Using a small amount of money they collect from each purchase, Better World Books uses carbon offsets to buy renewable energy credits and support reforestation. This is much more than I've seen any other online bookstore do to minimize their environmental impact.
I ordered two used books from them a few months ago and had a great experience. I even e-mailed them about a misspelling on a page on their website and got a nice personal e-mail back. Now they are the first place I go when I'm thinking of buying a book.

As a member of BetterWorld.com, I am able to peruse 29 categories with an inventory of 1.8 million books, 500,000 titles, new and used. I can sort by rank, popularity, price, author or title. Search Side Walk Sale or the Entire Store. Type in "green" and have titles to review, starting with "Green Eggs & Ham" and ending with "The Everything Book of Floors, Walls, and Ceilings" by Tom Greener.
Through Better World, members help fund and support literacy programs like Room to Read, Books for Africa, World Fund, and National Center for Family Literacy. Recycling books is key to their mission, as well. Better World: Book by Book is environmentally responsible and smart: e-mail friendly, normally ships with a 24-hour or less, has an excellent return policy, and carbon-neutral. Here's great customer service for you: If you live remote, they'll find a way to get that book to you...they'll "find a yak", if necessary.
