Organic breakfast, brunch restaurant owned and founded by Chez Panisse's Alice Waters
Address map 1603 San Pablo AveThis is one of the few cafes in the Bay Area that really feels European - it's not a regular sit-down breakfast place and yet they attract a huge crowd on weekdays and weekends with a queue going out the door. They offer a limited menu and superlative coffee from Mr Espresso. All their bread is provided by their neighbor - Acme Bakery (so, yes, weekends there are two long lines for both venues).
They have limited outdoor seating and the inside foodbar is a stand-up affair. Service is quick and courteous, prices are pretty reasonable. It's in a great location - just at San Pablo & Cedar, it's on many bus lines and just a few blocks from N. Berkeley BART.
I really love that area because there are so many useful and favorite retail shops nearby - Pet Barn & Wild Bird Annex are across the street, Wilderness Exchange, the Army Surplus, REI and so many other shops are within walking distance.
Cafe Fanny is a great place to get a light meal in midst of your Saturday errands, and even a great place to linger given proper availability of outdoor seating and company.
