Chimney Charcoal Starter.
BuyOK, so we all know that gas grills are way better for the environment than charcoal ones. Charcoal grills are so bad for the environment in fact that some cities have considered banning them. The reasons for this are multiple and I don't feel like enumerating them here.
Unfortunately, I live in an apartment in San Francisco with no yard - this leaves me with no where to keep a gas grill. I was heartbroken to sell my old grill, but after I moved it was either buy a small, portable charcoal grill or give up grilling forever. Giving up grilling? Not me.
So now I have a charcoal grill and I was looking for the most environmentally friendly way to use it. It turns out that the worst part about charcoal grills is the lighter fluid you use to light them. That stuff all just burns right up into the atmosphere and doesn't help do anything except warm up your coals. Enter the charcoal chimney. You put your charcoal into this thing, put it on top of your grill, and stuff some newspaper in the bottom. No lighter fluid required. Light the newspaper, and because of the proximity of the coals, you will have red hot coals in less than 20 minutes. Not only does this stop you from having to use lighter fluid, but you also get your coals heated faster, so less carbon enters the atmosphere needlessly while you wait for your coals to heat up prior to cooking your burger (or tofu dog - however you roll).
After the coals are hot, you just grab the handle (which is insulate) and dump the coals right into your grill. Ready to cook almost right away!
