Let's face it, more and more people will do it in the future in big cities. That's not really a secret, car sharing is growing exponentially in cities across United States and before that in Europe.
City Car Share service is good, they have a lot of cars and a lot of locations. The cars are in good condition and latest models. They also have a few trucks if you need to move big stuff. In my neighborhood there are 4 City Car Share lots within two blocks from my house. On street cleaning days I parked my car much further than that. Not to mention that I sometimes forget where I parked :(
One problem with City Car Share, is that it became so popular that for a period it was actually hard to get a car if you don't do it a day ahead.
Good for:
Reducing cost of car ownership, if you mostly drive in the city it is really cheap on an annual basis
Parking shortage
Cars are $$$ and you can use the money for other stuff (equity!)
Reduce environmental impact. Cars take a lot of energy and commodities to produce.
Not good for:
If you need a car for work
If you drive a lot
If you need a car available always on a moments notice.
Out of the city trips are expensive, you might as well just rent a car for a day.

City CarShare is a must. They are great for being able to get errands done and usually you can get a car in a pinch.
Also, unlike other car share programs, City CareShare is non-profit, and reflects community needs better than for profit programs.
One thing that often gets overlooked about owning cars is that manufacturing cars take an enormous amount of energy, so if people use a car share program, instead of owning, you can save what is left with the ozone layer.

Unlike New York, SF is one of those cities where are car comes in quite useful. Not only does CCS save me money - no insurance, no parking, no gas, no car payment- but it's usually there when I need it. They have pods all over the city, and tons of cars to chose from.
I don't love their automated system, but their online site is fab-o.

I've been using citycar for half a year now. It's almost a necessity in sf if you don't have a car. The greatest thing is you can pick the kind of car you need. Want to pick up a couch off craigslist, get the pickup truck. Want to take a bunch of friends for a hike in muir woods, get a 5 seater scion.

For three years I used City Car Share instead of owning a vehicle. The 'pods' are located all over the city, within walking distance from all public transportation. I estimated I saved over $500 per month by using their service vs. owning my own vehicle.

City Car Share is a wonderful way to enjoy access to a vehicle without incurring all the expenses. However, my one complaint is their billing process - seems to be two months behind (always seems to have a balance, even though I pay in full).

We bike, walk, or take transit most places. We can easily afford a car, but it would sit most of the time. City CarShare meets our needs for car transportation, without any of the traditional hassles of ownership. We don't need to buy, insure, repair, clean or maintain anything. We don't even depend on any one car - City CarShare has hundreds of cars available - which we can pick up from wherever we are.
