Organic raw sauerkraut available through Whole Foods & Farmer's Markets.
Address map 800 Bancroft Wayi don't normally write reviews like this but this is one product i just had to express my gratitude for. i wish i could get this all the time. my body craves it - i'm hooked!! i live in southern california but used to be in sf so anytime i am in town i have to make a stop at rainbow grocery and buy like 5 or more jars of this stuff to last me until the next visit - it's that incredible. i guess delivering it long distances would not be a green business practice, so i guess if i can't make the sauerkraut come to me i have to go to it. all the different flavors are sooo good! dang!

I love all things fermented (beer wine, booze) so I have recently gotten into different forms of fermented foods, like tempeh, Kim chi and Sauerkraut. I have always enjoyed the strange sour taste of these foods, but the first time I tasted the the Raw Sea Kraut from this brand I was absolutely stunned. It was so freakin good. I was eating something totally unrelated (I don't remember what, knowing me it was probably some sort of pasta dish) and I just took an extra bowl out of the cabinet, put a few forkfuls of this stuff into it, and just chowed down. It wasn't on a sandwich, it wasn't in a soup - I just ate it plain. It was honestly that good! The flavor that the seaweed brings in is so ALIVE - it makes the entire kraut taste less like something you find in a large bin and more like a delicate, subtle cultured food. I recommend this too anyone - even if you don't like krauts! Plus - organic is always good.
If you absolutely *hate* sauerkraut, I have one good reason for you to give it another try: Cultured makes amazing, fresh, organic raw sauerkraut and kim chee. You can find these products at Bay Area natural grocery stores and at farmer's markets. Every variety is great -- the kim chee is spicy without being overwhelming; Lemon Dill is my favorite, but they have a green apple sauerkraut that is very tasty as well as an "old fashioned" one with caraway seeds. Don't heat it - that will kill it - it's great on top of seitan and rye for a vegan rueben sandwich. Your mouth and your tummy will thank you.
