Organic vs. Local vs. Sustainable

Another organic option in the freezer case, and it's Greek style frozen yogurt? I had to try it! And the verdict - it does taste very, very good, with that tangy-ness yogurt has but often frozen yogurt is lacking. And it's organic, so they get points for that. They lose points however for several reasons. This product is imported from New Zealand, where I can only imagine how many fossil fuels are burned during shipping to the US. Also this tasty treat is packaged in a plastic pint container, that is made from No. 5 plastic - one of the least recyclable types of plastic! Shame on them, I expect better from those down under. The contents may have settled during shipping, but there seemed to be 15-20% of air instead of yogurt at the top of the pint, once it was opened. And no doubt due to the cost of imports, this product sells for $7 at Whole Foods.
The company, Serra Natural Foods, gets points for starting a recycling program locally, where they will pick up their old plastic pints and deliver them to a recycler. Great for those in New Zealand, but what about their containers up North? They have potential to be converted into cute flower pots, if the design was revised slightly. I'm offended when their website states they had to chose No. 5 plastic for their injection mold containers. Why not challenge the status quo and find a sustainable material that can be used for long term packaging? I'm sure the McDonough Braungart Design Chemistry company would have a solution to this problem!
