What is the carbon footprint of your food?
It's not something we usually think about, but our food consumption accounts for an incredible amount of our carbon footprint. Beef and cheese for instance? More than 18% of th entire carbon footprint of the world comes form cows. Or should we call it a hoof print?
The simple answer here is to do as Michael Pollen says - Eat food, not too much, mostly plants. Throw in eating local and organic as often as you can, and we have a decent start.
That being said, it's not the end of the story. The tricky thing about this whole situation is that local isn't always better. For instance, eating a Jersey tomato that was grown in a greenhouse 20 miles away from your home in Jersey is more carbon intensive than eating one grown in the sun in Florida and then shipped North. East Coast people - did you know getting wine from France is less carbon intensive than having it shipped from California? (the reason is that cargo ships are less polluting than trucks)
