Great Bags from Candy Wrappers

These bags are super cool - I feel like I see them, or at least some version of them, at every local artisan show that I go to (SF Indi-Mart, WAHOO!). Still though, they represent so much good. At least so far, there are some things we just haven’t figured out good packaging solutions for. Some of my favorites foods, almond and hemp milk, are perfect examples. You can’t recycle those cartons because they are lined with something (no idea what) so that what is in those cartons can exist for months on the shelves unopened instead of in the fridge like regular milk because people just buy them way less. Maybe we can change that at some point.

Anyway, getting back to my point – candy wrappers are another perfect example. As of yet, no one has managed to figure out how to keep something like say, a Clif bar, in a packaging without that inner layer of stuff to keep them fresh. It’s just the way those things work – you don’t want a shelf life for your energy bars similar to that of your fresh fruit – that is the whole point of energy bars!

Eventually, someone will come up with a way to make these magical liners recyclable/compostable. Until then, we need to find ways to use them that doesn’t just mean they end up in the trash. Enter these awesome bags! They use old candy and gum wrappers to make these super sweet, super strong bags that also make a statement about how you feel about trash!

If you are REALLY into it, check out this website - http://candywrapperpurse.blogspot.com/2007/08/chip-wrapper-purse.html. They have instructions on how to make your own! If you do this, please post pictures! I want to see someone actually do it!

It's in the Bag...Candywrappers, Movie Billboards and Pull Tabs

You can find Ecoist candywrapper, pull tab and movie billboard handbags and belts at Moxie and Redux in Portland, San Francisco Museum of Craft & Design and Yoga Tree in San Fransisco...or use the Ecoist online store-locator map to find all the other retail shops across the country that carry Ecoist's unique accessories. However, you will find that a number of their accessories are not available at the time of this review. Too bad...I had hoped to order their Confetti Collection Jumbo Shoulderbag.

Ecoist's sustainability efforts include taking materials that typically end up in land-fills and recycle them, along with eco-friendly fabrics, into accessories. They work with environmentally responsible, fair trade suppliers, manufacturers and organizations throughout the world. When you buy a handbag, Ecoist plants a tree through their afflilation with Trees for the Future.

Ecoist handbags - amazing product

Made by groups around the world such as women's groups in Mexico, ecoist.com markets really cool and flashy environmentally friendly bags, place mats, bracelets, and other products. EVERYTHING is made by weaving recycled products such as potato chip bags, medinical containers, and candy wrappers. Ecoist.com is helping women's groups turn trash into cash. Very cool. They also plant tree for every bag they sell.
