Address map 2530 San Pablo Ave.I've been visiting this site for a while now, and am enjoying this wonderful model of a community-based resource center that has far reaching influence through the internet. I wish this type of eco-center was available in every city!

Like many things in Berkeley, the Ecology Center is a one-of-a-kind. This is by far the greatest resource I have ever come across for getting help living the green life. The EC has been instrumental in developing many of the greatest programs that help people help the planet. The list is long...curbside recycling, farmers' markets, biodiesel garbage truck fleets, free compost giveaways, and practically anything else you can think of that has spread to other cities who are trying to be more green. But that's just the beginning. They have a GREAT website that lists more resources than you can shake a stick at. If you can't find your answer on their site, don't worry. You can call them and one of their researchers will go looking for the answer and get back to you when they find it. Check them out, and if you like them consider donating to this non-profit. It's the best money spent.

The Ecology Center has great resources -- a seed exchange (BASIL), books for sale and for loan, a magazine, information about recycling, and lots of great information about environmentally and socially responsible practices. In addition to information and classes (see the calendar at http://www.ecologycenter.org/calendar/), other projects include:
Bay Area Coalition for Headwaters
Bay Area Seed Interchange Library
Berkeley Biodiesel Collective
Berkeley Community Gardening Collaborative
California Farmer's Market Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) Implementation and Promotion Project
City of Berkeley Motor Oil Recycling Program
Community Water Rights Project
Global Alliance for Incinerator Alternatives / Global Anti-Incinerator Alliance (GAIA)
Indigenous Permaculture Project
Plastics Task Force

The Ecology Center works very hard to provide information on green products, organizations and services. When I first moved back to the Bay after 12 years elsewhere I was looking for a place to buy renewable, or refurbished environmentally friendly furniture. They had someone on staff email me a very comprehensive list that included descriptions of each establishment. It was a HUGE help, and I really appreciated it!

Great place to buy seeds, gifts, specialty items. Also great place to go for local information. Very helpful and knowledgeable staff. If they don't have something, they can help you find a resource that does.

This store is run by the nonprofit Ecology Center. It the perfect place to shop for a gift. And it is a great place to learn how to garden and buy the organic supplies you need. They also have advice on environmentally friendly paints and household cleaning products. Plus you can find the entire array of the latest issues of environmental magazines and books. www.ecologycenter.org
