Environmentalism Sprouts Up On Corporate Boards

by Adam W.

About 25% of Fortune 500 companies now have a board committee overseeing the environment, compared with fewer than 10% five years ago!

As an avid Stephan Colbert fan (fanatic, if you will) I always love his assertions that he now believes in global warming because An Inconvenient Truth made lots of money so therefore the marketplace had decided that global warming exists. It is doubly funny because to a lot of people, this is really how the world works (not quite on such a ridiculous scale, but the theory still applies). For instance, I find over and over again that I will tell my girlfriend about some evil corporate maneuver just to be ignored, until she reads about it in the Wall Street Journal 2 weeks later and then approaches me with “Oh my God, you will never believe what I saw in the Wall Street Journal today…”

Well, now the Wall Street Journal has confirmed that new environmental policies are important for the Fortune 500 companies. A new report out just this morning confirms that now 1 in 4 Fortune 500 companies has, not only environmental policies, but at least 1 person whose sole job is overseeing those environmental policies. Now that is a marketplace truth I can really get behind.
