Choose to Re-use!

I ordered a bunch of these bags to give as gifts. I agree, I would give these 5 stars if they were made of 100% sustainable materials, but I had to make a choice this year, after joining the ranks of the unemployed for the first time. I ordered the sets (cheaper) and broke them up, each person gets a bag, and I can reuse the larger pouches (good for travel) or include them as gifts stuffed w/ other goodies. I have used a pair of similar, yet smaller bags for the last 2 years. And the convenience of having them pack into a small bundle is what really makes them easy to use. I keep one in my backpack and the other in my purse, always at the ready no matter what I may need a bag for - including take out / restaurant leftovers, dropping off dry cleaning, toting small packages to the post office, or a stop at Walgreens. These aren't just for "shopping" anymore and it's a great feeling that I've stopped the accumulation of plastic bags in my home. But I think for the uninitiated having these bags come in a great graphic assortment, of colors and patterns anyone would love, makes them even more likely to be remembered and used! I don't care that these are used merely for a fashion statement, but one less plastic bag is a small victory, which can add up every day. I also got a small shower timer with my order, which was nice free gift from Envirosax.

Better than disposable, but not fantastic

I was given a set of envirosax for a gift, and I admit, I do use them regularly. It's nice that they pack so small that I can always have one in the bottom of my bag or backpack. However, they are made from 100% polyester, so they are essentially made from the same petroleum as a disposable plastic bag. It's better that they are made to be reused often, but, let's face it, it's still oil. And when they wear out, where are they going to end up? Probably still in a landfill.

Plus, they are made in China, and the company is based in Australia, so they made quite a long trek around the world before they ended up in my pocket in Oregon.

So, if you're choosing between envirosax and disposable plastic, obviously go with envirosax. But organic, natural materials, or materials reclaimed from the waste stream are a much better choice in the long run.
