Etsy is an online marketplace for buying & selling all things handmade.
Unfortunatley I didn't find someone local but I did post a request for custom made christmas stockings and I got several proposals and settled on Alison from Utilitu and I love them! They are creative and beautiful and custom made for my family of four - all for $50.

I had initially written a review singing Etsy's praises. However, as of today, March 15, 2009, that has all changed.
Etsy is young and is still working out flaws in its business model. I no longer have an account there due to some pretty awful mismanagement of my store and their customer service.
This was after a run in with a bad seller and several weeks of hassle to get my money back.
Make of this what you will; shop and sell at your own risk.

I've been buying and selling on etsy for about a year and half now and I'm loving every minute of it. It's a great place to buy stuff that you know was made in good conditions. I've gotten clothing, soap, stationary, and more. If you look hard enough you can find great things for amazing prices. I became obsessed with Lush bath bombs, but really cannot afford them. No problem! I found a seller on etsy who hand makes natural bath bombs and sells them for half of Lush's price.
They also have the awesome "upcycle" contest which encourages crafters to make stuff out of used materials. Good for the planet!

Etsy has some great stuff - from toys and clothing to vegan twinkies. You can find just about anything and it's all hand-made. You can ask questions and find inspiration for your own projects. Etsy just rocks!

One reason I love buying directly from Etsy sellers is how personal the transaction is. I like to ask lots of questions about items. And sometimes the crafts people can customize an item to your specifications. Also, it's important to me not to be shipped items with alot of extra packaging, especially plastic, and that's the kind of thing I can request directly from them beforehand. Another nice thing about the Etsy web site is that you can find sellers within your own geographical location in order to cut down on shipping distance and fuel costs. So far, I've had five great experiences with Etsy sellers and hope to have more.

Etsy.com is where you can find unique, hip, cute, crafty handmade items for sale and in turn support local and no-so-local artists. Etsy is the place to sell your stuff as the audience is international and the fees are minimal. You purchase directly from the seller via paypal. Etsy is a great destination for all your holiday shopping needs. I purchased some very reasonably priced small artworks for myself (couldn't resist) and as gifts for friends. The website is very easy to use, with fun search tools like time machine, color and geolocator, which lets you chose listings from around the globe or locally. It's great to support local artists, but also fun to get a package from the UK too. I especially look forward to the personal communication with the artists via their handwritten thank you notes. Etsy has over 2 dozen categories to shop from, which include plants, edibles, crochet, toys, music and 'everything else'.

I just discovered Etsy today, and I am seriously addicted. Why did I not know about this sooner? I can't write a review because I have not bought anything yet, but this is the PERFECT way to buy local (you can type in... more »
