Organic food sales have doubled since the federal government began its certification. But Americans' health has not gotten better. Can the first lady make a difference?

While awareness of food safety and nutrition may have increased, peoples' habits -- and a fuller understanding of what healthy eating actually is -- has not. Americans seem to really be diggin' "organic." Unfortunately this word is not synonymous with safe or healthy.

Anyway - I love that Michelle Obama has made it her her cause (at least one of them) to promote locally grown, healthy food and home-cooking. She just started planting her vegetable garden last week on the South Lawn of the White House. She's been dubbed "First Locavore" by Oprah's Magazine.

From the NYT:

Last week, Michelle Obama began digging up a patch of the South Lawn of the White House to plant an organic vegetable garden to provide food for the first family and, more important, to educate children about healthy, locally grown fruits and vegetables at a time when obesity and diabetes have become national concerns.

But Mrs. Obama also emphasized that there were many changes Americans can make if they don’t have the time or space for an organic garden.

“You can begin in your own cupboard,” she said, “by eliminating processed food, trying to cook a meal a little more often, trying to incorporate more fruits and vegetables.”
