Handy list for organic produce shopping....

Let's face it - not all organic produce is within everyone's budget. There are some items you should always buy organic and there are many that are relatively safe to buy when organic is not available or entirely within your budget. And, those roadside produce stands can be so tempting with their promices of cherries for 99 cents/pound and "local stone fruit."

To make our lives easier, and more informed, The Environmental Working group has published the 5th edition of their Shopper's Guide -- it's got a great information across the site about pesticides in our food, with a focus on the 44 most common/popular fruits and veggies.

They have a super pretty downloadable guide that you can bring to the grocery store with you.

If you don't have time, here's the short list of the items you should always buy organic because they consistently test for the highest amount of chemicals: Apples, Sweet Bell Peppers, Celery, Nectarines, Strawberries, Cherries, Lettuce, Grapes - Imported, Pears.

The five fruits least likely to have pesticide residues on them are avocados, pineapples, mangoes, kiwi, and bananas - meaning - it's safe enough to buy that giant box of mangoes or avocados at Costco if you can eat them all before they go off.
