Forest of Memories - Natural Burial, the Ecological Choice

This morning, my mother called to read me a newspaper article about natural burials. It jogged my memory; I recalled reading a magazine article four years ago about eco burials. So, I went online and found a wonderful resource, Forest Of Memories that provides information and resources for eco burials and sustainable, natural burial preserves, not only in North America, but also in the UK and Europe, Asia and Africa. Eco burials are also referred to as natural, sustainable, and woodland burials. Natural burial preserves are also called green cemeteries. Also, the use of biodegradable burial products such as wooden and natural fiber caskets and shrouds is another reason why eco burials are better for the environment.

Often death and dying is very difficult for most of us to talk about, even the practical decisions that need to be made in advance about budgeting for the often mounting costs associated with conventional methods of burials, cremations and memorial services, especially when trying to discuss with our loved ones what their personal wishes are. I think talking with family and friends about these relatively new environmental choices can soften, make abridge to, this sensitive subject - making it possible to discuss the topic of death and dying, which can otherwise be met with resistance, even denial.

Imagine this...a serene place in a natural burial preserve, the perfect setting to walk and sit while you visit your loved one's resting place, a natural burial site that subtly blends with the landscape, where a grave marker such as a tree, a shrub or an engraved stone indigenous to the area is placed in his or her memory.

Note: EPA estimates crematoriums emit approximately 320 pounds of mercury into our atmosphere each year from the burning of dental fillings. The use of formaldehyde for embalming contributes to the pollution of underground water. Whereas, eco burial services use only biodegradable materials in the process of laying someone to rest.
