Seventh Generation Bleach
I use Seventh Generation Bleach on all my whites that aren't printed. I generally separate out nicer clothes, just because any bleach will cause some damage to the clothes. For my white towels, socks, and white T-shirts, this stuff is great. Just the other day I got a comment about how white my shirt looked (how often does that happen?!?!)
Chlorine based bleaches creates chlorinated organic compounds and chloramines. These compounds can sometimes become toxic, carcinogenic, and may lose their biodegradability as a result of chlorine bleach. Further, chloramines have been shown to be a respiratory irritant, so think about that when you are washing your clothes indoors (that "chlorine smell")
Works great (better than chlorine), cheap, good for the ecosystem

Use peroxide, not chlorine
"Bleach" is sometimes necessary, but chlorine is not. Try "nonchlorine" bleach. It's a peroxide/water mix and it works

Nice and clean
The first time I used Seventh Generation Bleach was when I had to do laundry in our new home. We were running out of clean clothes and our washing machine had not been used yet. There were no other detergents that I was familiar with in the house. Since our clothes were in the hamper for more than two weeks, I used a little more than the recommended amount. When I opened the washer, I was pleased to see how white the towels and underwear looked. More importantly, the clothes smelled so fresh without use of a harsh chemical like chlorine. It's good to know that we can clean our clothing and our homes with safe and environmentally friendly products like those from Seventh Generation.
