Lunch Boxes aren't just for Kids

I bought this to pack my husbands lunch a few days a week.

To clarify the issue with Polycarbonate is the concern of Bisphenol (BPA) leeching from the plastic to the food. A recent study showed that the most danger is when the container is subjected to heat (ie. boiling water... http://www.treehugger.com/files/2008/01/boiling_water_s.php). Which is why baby bottles that may be microwaved should not be used, or using a Nalgene as a thermos. This is a nice article about heating lunch box meals: http://lunchinabox.net/2007/08/06/box-lunches-hot-or-cold/.

That all being said, I only pack cold food for lunches so the containers are never heated. I like that the Lunchopolis system comes with a few different sized containers. One if perfect for a sandwich cut in half, one for chips etc., and two smaller ones that I use for a small piece of banana bread etc. for dessert. The lunch kit also includes a drink bottle that I fill with cold water. On the inside of the insulated carry bag is a pocket which I use to store a cloth napkin and Light My Fire spork. There is also enough room to pack a cold beverage (like a can or bottle) or an ice pack). It is light weight, compact, and I'm assuming "manly" enough that my husband will take it to work with him b/c I have not had any complaints ;)

So while a metal lunch system might be even better than this one, for the cost this one fits my needs. Compared to a Laptop Lunch this one costs less and includes just about the same items. The Laptop Lunch system is made of Polyethylene & Polypropylene which both also have controversy of leeching. IMAO, any reusable lunch box system is still far better than using disposable plastic bags, plastic wrap & paper bags.

I am giving Lunchopolis 3 stars b/c they could switch to other plastics such as copolyester, and they could manufacture them on our own soil.

Concerned about the implications of polycarbonate containers

I found out about this company because of reviews on sustainlane. I'll state up front that I have yet to purchase a lunch box from Lunchopolis. I was interested in getting one, but I'm concerned about their use of polycarbonate plastic. The Lunchopolis website defends their use of polycarbonate: "polycarbonate has been extensively tested over the last 50 years and its use in food-contact applications continues to be recognized as safe by the u.s. food and drug administration, the european commission scientific committee on food, " etc etc. It then refers readers to the website plasticsinfo.org, which is run by the American Chemistry Council.

Here's what I find interesting -- there are lots of reviews on sustainlane for people switching from Nalgene bottles to Sigg bottles or Klean Kanteens. It appears this is because they are trying to avoid using polycarbonate plastic containers. If the concerns about polycarbonate plastics leaching bisphenol A are at all true, why would I ever put my children's daily lunches in the same plastic?

That looks really nice. I'm still a fan of the no-plastic route, To-Go Ware. Maybe they don't pack as well, but can put in warm food. We pack one for our 2 1/2 year old every day. more »
