Composter
We've had the Garden Gourmet compost bin for over 7 years and it's still going strong. I may move it this year to a sunnier spot. In MN, the long winters mean that nothing much happens for a long time. Still for two people it has worked well for us. If more people composted, we extend the life of our landfills significantly.

Works well but watch out for the critters
I've been using the Garden Gourmet for a few years now and it works great. I'm still just learning what the right mix is to keep the soil rich (living in the Bay Area we don't get the hot sun as much) but with a blend of leaves and cardboard it's doing the trick. If you're just getting your start I think that composting is the single best educational experience I've had.
Extra plus is that somehow I got some nice red worms that made their way in, that I took out and put in my new worm composter! I'm sold.
Thing is, I've had some issues with critters, probably mice or rats, paying a visit to my little castle of composting, so I've had to put a mesh cover that I place between the top and the base. No more critters!

After a few years of dumping all our green waste in a compost bin made of 4 recycled pallettes and chicken wire (to keep the chihuahuas out), we finally took it apart, got all the beautiful composted material out, turned... more »
A perfect backyard composter
As I have become more aware of backyard permaculture concepts, I wanted to try composting. But I live in an suburban area, and I just didn't think my neighbors or my wife would tolerate a makeshift pile. So I purchased the Garden Gourmet. It snaps together quickly, and within a day this summer I was building a hot pile using peat moss, grass clippings (from my push-reel mower), refuse from my veggie garden and more. Living in Oklahoma, the black plastic walls cooked the pile nicely. By the late fall, I had a bin full of rich mulch that I'll use as additional material for my raised bed veggie garden. It's the perfect, easy solution for suburban composting.

can you add worms to this kind of composter, and can they move between levels? I know they can't stay out in the winter outdoors in the northeast or the worms will be lost. more »
