vaporize our trash into syngas

This is truly revolutionary and if this technology exists in Japan, why are we not using it to rid our precious planet of these landfills ?! See story here: (http://consciouschoice.com/2008/04/greenscene0804.html). Put simply, heating garbage or MSW - municipal solid waste to a temperature as hot as the surface of the sun, breaks up the material, into their molecules of hydrogen and carbon monoxide. These byproducts can be combined into a synthetic gas known as 'syngas' which is used in many different fuel types. This sounds like a toxic process but it is actually quite clean according to this article, breaking everything down and vaporizing it...sounds like science fiction coming to life. I wonder how much energy is needed to heat to such extreme temperatures?
