Green beater: New Prius vs. used Corolla

by Melanie K.

Is it more energy-efficient to buy a gas-guzzling used car than a brand-new hybrid? Here you find an answer...

This article approaches the question if it is more wasteful to buy a brand-new car, given all the energy that goes into the production process than buying a certified, pre-owned vehicle with decent gas mileage.

Now I am doing something that one shouldn't do (or does that only count for movies?), I am giving away the 'grand finale':

A certified, pre-owned car would have to average better than 37 mpg in order to match the Prius' energy consumption over the long haul. Even the Corolla only reaches an average gas mileage 30.5 mpg (automatic transmission).

The article is written very well and the author considers a lot of different sources and information to reach his final statement.

Have fun reading and buying a new Prius (if it wasn't so d@#m expensive).
