Birds of a Feather: Dating Green
The last year has brought to light more stories about vegans who will only date other vegans, aka "vegansexuals." Recently, lately, am seeing more articles about one's carbon footprint and green lifestyle as important considerations in dating. There's even a neologism for this: ecosexual.
Yesterday, there was a story on NPR about a green speed dating event -- so, since this is going somewhat mainstream, I thought I'd do a bit of digging. It seems that Treehugger and the LA Times recently covered this same Green Speed Dating event.
There are dozens of green dating sites: www.green-passions.com, www.greensingles.com, www.greenromance.com and so forth. A quick perusal of the dating section of craigslist reveals plenty of folks who want people with similar values - not just "Green" but a whole range of things.
So, is "ecosexual" or "green dating" really just another value that you want to find in a potential mate or is it a growing trend?
If you're single, do you only date folks who are at least as green as you -- or interested and motivated?
As a vegan, I have found it really hard to date people who don't eat vegetables. I dated someone who would even pick out the peas and corn from his pork-fried rice. I've dated someone who was strictly on a "protein" diet so that meant vegetarian friendly places with pasta were off the agenda for our dinners out. It's definitely easier dating someone who eats like I do.
Certainly, my sweetie is about as green as I am -- and we both learn from each other constantly, so it works out well. I don't think I would be comfortable dating someone who drove a giant gas guzzling SUV all the time (I do periodically give my landlord grief about owning both an SUV and an old BMW) or who engaged in sports that were very ungreen (like driving to Oceano Dunes in a Hummer pulling an RV trailer full of quadrunners).
How do you manage your dating life and maintain the integrity of your green values or lifestyle?
