Convenient and Cheap
I have been saving my electronic waste take down to these guys for some time (try several months) and I finally got around to carting my big box O' trash down to these guys. Know how much everything in thyat box cost to recycle? $1.50. Seriously.
Now that is completely fair, because most of what was in there where things they take for free like batteries and CD's. Even then though, I am really glad i took my random stuff here for recycling, and the piece of mind that came with it was certainly worth a 20 minute trip and a buck 50.

Green Citizen for your Electronic Trash
Back in 1992 or 1991, I remember when a friend, who worked for Arthur Andersen at the time, walked me through the specifics of my first computer purchase. I was replacing a Sanyo MBC 1550 with two 5.25" floppy drives (all ROM memory) with a laptop. "80 Mb is all you'll need -- do you know how much typing you'll have to do to fill that up?"
That computer got me through the end of my senior year as an undergrad and through grad school. It was a black-and-white plasma screen (oooh!) and had Windows 3.1. I used Word Perfect 5.1 and PFS WindowWorks -- later acquired by Microsoft and turned into Excel and the basis for MS Office.
I now have a desktop machine with two external 400 Gb drives, two internal 400 Gb drives set up as a RAID array, an 80 Gb drive (the original drive when put this machine together with a friend six years ago) and a 200 Gb drive. I also have a big box of sound cards, cords, cables and junk that I don't use. It might be about time to replace my motherboard.
Fortunately, there's Green Citizen -- I can take all my computer junk to them and they'll recycle it. They take apart components that can be re-used and build new computers for school kids, and then break down the other stuff. There are a lot of items they'll take for free -- but you may have to pay a nominal fee (like fifty cents per pound) for other stuff.

$3 to recycle cassette tapes. What a steal.
So I did it. I decided to leave jr. high behind, and I would start by getting rid of all my cassette tapes, the tapes that I labored to collect, the mix tapes from ex-boyfriends, evidence of my cool kid credibility. I had to admit that I didn't listen to any of this stuff anymore, and would not be purchasing a cassette tape player anytime in the near future. I piled them into a paper bag, and searched for "cassette tape recycling." When I found out that Green Citizen was in my area, I squealed with delight. For fifty cents a pound, they recycled my jr. high memories. Good Riddance! They are open 7 days a week, have 2 parking spaces for their downtown SF location, perfect for when you have to haul in bigger electronics like stereos, and computer monitors (which they recycle for FREE). The people in there are super nice, I talked to Dwight. Thank you Green Citizen for the doing the earth (and my conscience a favor).

Sustainably Correct Recycling
I just dropped a bunch of obsolete and unrepairable computer components at Green Citizen for responsible recycling. The disposal of two monitors was free! Asst. Manager, Dwight, was great to work with. They recycle most batteries for free too! I didn't have to worry about cleaning my hard drive to avoid Identity Theft as Dwight assured me that the computer would never be powered up again before it gets melted into oblivion and appears again in some other form.

Green and Secure Computer Recycling
GreenCitizen is a great service that is important to people for 3 reasons:
1) Helps you declutter and get rid of old equipment you don't really need.
2) Prevents identity theft by destroying sensitive information.
3) Recycles, stating they only partner with "responsible recyclers."
It's brilliant and cost effective for the most part.

Responsible Electronics Recycling
Convenient, Safe, Accountable! Who knew recycling electronics could be so easy! And they make sure that these items do not get dumped or shipped over seas. They accept everything from microwaves to batteries and even videotapes. Free recycling for laptops, monitors, TVs, ink cartridges, batteries, cds/dvds, and cell phones.

Recycle Computers and Electronics
Every year, an estimated 400 million units of obsolete electronics are scrapped. By 2010, three billion units will be in need of responsible recycling.
Green Citizen takes computers, monitors, cell phone, TVs and other electronic items and recycles them for you. They have a simple drop off station that is open 7 days a week and also have another store in Palo Alto.
In the past I had to go to drive thru recycling locations that were only open once a month, this is much more convenient and they recycle more items. There may be a small charge associated with some items but it is worth it since they can even erase or destroy your hard drive and remove all your cell phone records. Great place, very helpful staff.

Green Citizen Rocks
This new company is awesome, they have paved the way to taking our electronic waste and instead of dumping it in third world countries , they take electronics apart and make sure they recycle the parts in an eco-friendly way. They even take responsibility by making sure that everything gets recycled responsibly by a bar code tracking system.
