Check out ShowerStart

Hey fellow urbanites, if you can't put in a grey water system there are plenty of way to still save water. Check out the showerstart, it actually stops the water from pouring out of the showerhead while you wait for it to get warm. (http://evolveshowerheads.com/). This is the handiest water-saving device I have found thus far when living in the city. Simple aerators on tap water faucets and other quick fixes can also help. (you can usually get these pretty cheap from places like environmentally sound products and the like). Good luck saving water!

Hi Tiff - I am curious about your rating of only one star for this listing. The Greywater Guerrillas website isn't about just installing a "greywater system" but has all kinds of tips and information about capturing... more »

Sorry! Actually, the system only let me select one star...I would have given it a 5 :) more »

Going Grey for the Green

If you haven't heard of greywater, now is the time to start thinking about where your water goes after it comes out of the shower or faucet. From the simplest greywater recycling -- putting an empty bucket in the shower to collect water while you wait for it to get warm, to systems with plant filtration that allow all household waste to irrigate yards and gardens -- more and more people are getting involved.

Though many urban areas disapprove, there are a lot of things you can do to ensure your nearly-clean water is reused. If you use biodegradable laundry soap (no salts or boron), you can divert the water from your washer right out into your yard to an awaiting cistern to irrigate your yard:

You can set up elaborate systems to treat the water to clean it out more by running it through tubs of plants - http://www.greywaterguerrillas.com/project-punani.html

You can even create a composting toilet which diverts urine for use as fertilizer. Urine is one of the best nitrogen fertilizers out there and you're just throwing it away! Human waste can be used as compost but has to sit for a much longer period of time (more details at http://www.greywaterguerrillas.com/project-mateoct.html)

For me - the easiest greywater reclamation acts will be:
1. Divert my laundry water out of the house
2. Put a bucket under my bathroom sink to collect greywater to flush the toilet (isn't using fresh, potable water to flush the toilet one of the most wasteful things you ever did?)
3. Put a bucket under my kitchen sink to collect greywater to use in the garden.

What greywater will you reclaim?
