Vegetarian, vegan restaurant + bar, beer garden, late night kitchen, free bike parking.
Address map 2311 W North AveMy boyfriend turned me on to this place, where bike messengers and vegetarians call home. The Handlebar has great food, at great prices, hearty portions, and a hip, urban, bike-themed decor. But my favorite thing on the menu is the simple, gloriously cheesy, gouda mac + cheese. I have not tasted a better version and cannot replicate it at home. It's not baked, sans the crunchy topping, but pure heaven on a plate. Besides the many veggie options, there is also fish on the menu, in the form of tuna, catfish and fish tacos. I love their blackened catfish, bbq seitan and apple celery slaw. Their signature salad and omelette both feature pears, walnuts and cheese, a tasty mix. When it's warm, grab a table in their rear patio beer garden, and if the food doesn't fill you up, don't forget to try their delicious plaintains foster, yummy!
