Hooray For Bulk Foods
by Adam W.
Why buying bulk is good for the planet and for your pocketbook
There are tons of good reasons to buy bulk food:
For one, you don’t even need to change your habits – you can buy the same foods you buy now, but in larger quantities without fancy labels and less packaging. You will also accomplish several things – you will save money, save gas, be prepared for a food emergency/crisis, not ruin the planet with unnecessary packaging (usually plastic!) and will never be without those foods you love!
Bulk Food Cost Less
Purchasing bulk foods is an economical way to save money. The average family can save hundreds of dollars a month. Plus, bulk food are concentrated. A single gallon size can of food contains a huge quantity of food.
Try Dehydrated!
Dehydrated foods have come a long way in the last few years. Coming close in flavor and texture to their expensive freeze-dried cousins, these foods not only taste great but can often be prepared in the same amount of time it takes to prepare food purchased from the grocery store.
Long term shelf life (Depending on what you buy)
Shelf life for bulk foods in cans or buckets is anywhere from 7 - 30 years!!
Easily stored!
Dried and dehydrated food can be stored just about anyplace and will be ready when you need it. You can even keep your extra food under your bed! If purchased in cans or buckets, your food is quite safe from dust, rodents and insects!
Investment!
Buying food now is actually a sound financial investment. Everybody has to eat, but the cost of food rises each year. The price of grains now for instance is almost 25% higher than it was just a year ago! Imagine getting that kind of return from the stock market!
Most people aren't aware of how intricately their food is linked to petroleum. Today's massive production of food is only possible because of oil. As oil supplies decline and dwindle, they skyrocket in price. Food does too, because food production is very oil-intensive. Gas runs everything from farm equipment to production facilities, transportation and distribution. Even the local delivery truck!
No Packaging!
Wasteful packing of our food is one of the most unneccesary contributors to landfills. Every time you open up a 100 calorie snack pack for nstance, you are tossing something into a landfill FOREVER. All for about 7 bite sized cookies. There is no need for that! Go to the store, buy you food in bulk, then take out as much as you need at a time. The planet (and you children) will thank you.
