How to Make Homemade Bath Salts for Gifts!

Posted on December 3, 2008
by Jordana G.

A friend gave me this recipe, and last year I gave lavender bath salts to my friends.

What You'll Need

  • Kosher salt
  • Aromatic essential oil
  • Dried fragrant plants (like lavender or eucalyptus)
  • Spice sachet
  • Shell for a scoop
  • Food coloring, if you like, to "match" the scent (it does not color the bath water; I tested it!)

Instructions

Step 1: Mix the salt with several drops of the essential oil (I chose lavender) until it has an aroma strength to your liking. Stir in dried, fragrant plants or herbs.

Step 2: Mix a food coloring color you like, and add to the salt, one drop at a time until it has the desired color. As usual with food coloring, a little goes a long way, so add gradually.

Step 3: Make it look pretty in a nice glass jar or aluminum container that you can decorate. If you do use dried plants, a spice sachet is preferable so the plant bits don't clog your gift recipient's drain!

Take it an eco-step further:

Wash and repurpose a jelly jar. You can decorate the lid to match the salt. I was and save many of the 4-8oz glass jars that condiments, relishes, and sauces come in. They are perfect for this sort of gift.
