How To Recycle T-shirts Into Yarn

Posted on May 19, 2009

Recycle old T-shirts to make yarn for your next project. Much softer than plarn.

What You'll Need

  • T-shirt
  • Fabric Scissors

Instructions

Step 1: Begin by cutting the bottom seam and the top part of the shirt.

(I am using a polo with T-shirt-like fabric)

Step 2: Next, take the tube from the middle and fold in half - leaving a 1-inch margin at the top.

Step 3: Fold again, up to the margin.

You might find that this is too thick to cut through comfortably. If so, you can skip this step. You can always test this using the scrap part of the shirt you cut off earlier. I'm doing that here:

It's not too thick so I will carry on.

Step 4: Now, cut sections up to the margin. You can make them whatever width you like. Mine are about half an inch. Continue to the end.

You can test to see how thick your yarn would be at different widths, using the same scrap as earlier :

Step 5: Unravel.

Congratulations! We're halfway to our hulu skirt! Yay, now let's take a break and start some drinks...

...Just kidding! We're not done yet.

Step 6: Find something to lay your skirt/squid on. I'm using a rolled up blanket, I've also used a jar. Use whatever's around.

Cut slits on a diagonal.

Keep going!

Until you reach the end and...

Step 7: BAM! You've got yarn. Just roll it up into a ball and you're set.

Experiment with different clothing items/fabrics! :)
