Better technology...
...but wouldn't it be better in terms of energy involved -- to mine materials, design and manufacture all the new moving parts, etc -- to just use our old cars until they don't go anymore? Or forego car commuting altogether, asap? Car use should be banned as a form of casual daily commuting. Think of all the energy it would take you to get out of your car and push it all the way to work and back, once. I've pushed a new beetle around in an empty bart parking lot, and it's good exercise!
All these new hybrids are great, but it's still the old consumption, buybuybuy model. Cars are the problem. How can the solution be to buy more cars? I forgot to mention land use and zoning. Fixing zoning would fix things fastest. Restaurant in my dining room!
On the other hand... if people are going to buy these personality accessories anyway, they may as well be full hybrid.
