Great concept, poor execution...

I actually bought some of Lush's bar shampoo and conditioner - the idea of getting away from the plastic packaging appealed to me. And then I looked up the ingredients -- they both contain Sodium Laurel Sulfate.

Lush was great about the returns and told me that they would be switching over all their products to completely SLS/SLES-free sometime this summer.

Until then, demand better from your body care product manufacturers! Bar products that can be purchased in bulk without plastic packaging are a great idea - but ingredients matter.

Choose shampoos and conditioners with no Sodium Lauryl/Laureth sulfate if you can -- it's a known skin irritant and may result in damage to hair follicles and loss of hair. When used in bubble baths, it can cause irritation by damaging skin's protective surface (ever end up with red bumps from using bubble bath?

Solid shampoo: how cool is that?

The idea of a solid shampoo is what first got me from being curious about Lush products to actually trying them. There are a lot of great natural shampoos out there, but by and large they all come in a plastic bottle. Yes, that plastic is recyclable, but one of things I learned from the book Garbage Land is that there's a gap between the amount of plastic that is recycled and the demand for recycled plastic (amount recycled = a lot, demand = small). So the idea of having a decent shampoo with NO packaging sounded great.

After talking with the folks at the local store, I settled on the Hybrid, and I've been very happy with it. My hair tends to be quite dry, and Hybrid doesn't dry it out. I can use it without conditioner and still feel like my hair has moisture and is manageable. The smell is great -- sort of like licorice, but a lot more subtle than some other Lush products. Not overly masculine or feminine.

I've had the bar since January and there's still plenty left. I don't wash my hair everyday, so I'm guessing it will last me until at least the fall.

Hybrid solid shampoo isn't all natural -- looking at the ingredients on Lush's website, it's about 1/2 natural. It's more natural than most conventional shampoos, though, and the lack of any packaging is a big bonus.
