BYOB = bring your own bag

I think we need to start a new trend, and that's bringing your own bags to grocery stores and other shopping venues. I have a pile of cotton tote bags, mostly free from various trade shows. They are easy to come by, vary in size and color and like this one, can be a great environmental statement. I see so many DIY bags for sale on Etsy or at local boutiques, so you can support a local artist or create your own, sewing one or painting it like Cris suggested. I'd love one of these stenciled bags, but alas I'll settle for creating my own. Imagine the fashion statements that could be made at the grocery store! I think the key is remembering to bring the bags with you. But what if every store had some tote bags on hand for customers to use, and then all you had to do was bring them back and reuse them. I have extra bags I'd happily donate to my Whole Foods for customers to use. I know they sell their own as well. I currently bring back and reuse their paper bags, because they do hold food in a more structured way than a shapeless bag, but that's where bag design can improve.
Bravo to San Francisco for being the first city to effectively ban plastic bags!!!!

I'm Not a Plastic Bag, And, I'm Not Available!

World-renown handbag designer, Anya Hindmarch, launched an environmental campaign with her 20,000 limited-edition, eco-friendly cotton tote "I'm Not a Plastic Bag". Too late; can't have it. With unprecedented demand, her eco-bag sold out worldwide, yes, the USA too, and all remaining launches have been canceled. However, give them your email and they'll keep your updated. Just in case, there are not further editions, buy yourself some eco-friendly fabric paints, a lettering stencil, and design your own knock-off - "Not A Plastic Bag". I think that's legal. Anya shouldn't mind. It gets the message out, and that's what she really wants, right?
