"Singing Rooster" - Beyond Borders Folk Art
I recently purchased folk art handcrafted by a Haitian, Julio Hallan. With just a hammer, a chisel and the flattened end of an oil drum, this artisan created an intricately designed "Singing Rooster" motif, which now hangs on display on an exterior wall in our porte cochere, to welcome our guests.
Casey Riddel, founder of Beyond Borders, made a way for indigenous people, artisans like Julio, to have a better life by fairly compensating artists for their folk art. My Haitian rooster sang it's way to a retail store in Cottage Grove, Oregon. On the It's Catus website you can set up an account to order folk art for resale.
By the way, oil drums, to make them usable as art objects, must first be filled with straw, then lit on fire to scorch off all residue. Once they cool, they are cut into 4X6 pieces to make a metal canvas for the artisan to hand-chisel a design. Other folk art is created by sculpting glass soda bottles into vases.
