Reuse Your Shoes

I've found that a great pair of shoes, well made and meant to last, are typically an expensive pair of shoes. Even so, eventually something wears out or breaks down. That's the time, we start shopping for a new pair. However, if that pair was indeed a great pair of shoes, consider the greenest alternative, have them repaired; give them a second life.

At Footwise shoe store, in downtown Eugene, where I usually shop for shoes, they referred me to Jim The Shoe Doctor for shoe repairs. I recently took in a couple pair of Dansko and a couple pair of Sanita clogs. New, these four pairs cost me $560. The repairs cost me a total of $60. By reusing my shoes, I've saved $500 and added years to the life of my shoes.

To me, part of what it means to be green is to use what I already have to it's maximum potential. One way of doing this is to shop with a green eye toward eco-friendly fashions that have a classic, timeless quality, and avoid the fashions that come and go with seasonal palettes and trends.
