Very clean, Japanese-style baths. . .

I went here with a friend who lived in Japan, and she said this place is very clean and very much like baths in Japan.

I've been twice now, both times on all-female days (they have all-male, and co-ed). It's quiet, peaceful, welcoming (if you've never been before, you don't feel like an interloper), and clean. It's a little oasis off Fillmore Street.

If you don't know what order to do things in (when to go in the hot pool, cold pool, steam room, sauna), there's a card at the front desk where they suggest how to spend your time there.

You don't have to be naked, but everyone is, so be aware if you're modest!

My favorite place to soak...

Kabuki Springs is a world class day spa and Japanese style public bathhouse. It was renovated several years ago, but maintains a strong following of loyal pre-remodel clientele who seem to be all elderly Asian women who find it perfectly acceptable to dry their hand washed intimates in the dry sauna. That said -- it truly is the only "neighborhood" aspect of the spa.

The public baths have a self-monitored silence policy - if people start getting chatty, ring the gong on the table in front of the steam room. This table features all the goodies that come with your price of admission: big icy pitchers of filtered water with cucumber or orange slices, a bowl of salt for exfoliating in the steam room and a bowl of ice cubes next to a pile of small face cloths to put on your face while you relax. There's also hot tea inside the entry to the locker room.

Kabuki Springs offers many fantastic services -- I had the Lulur Treatment once -- it started with a soak in a deep Japanese individual bathtub that covers up to the chin, drenched in rosepetals and essential oils. The best facials I have ever had are at Kabuki -- if you've never had a facial, please don't get ooked out by the idea of "extractions" -- it's really a soothing, relaxing experience and you're face will glow and look great for weeks.

Kabuki Springs are located in an area rich with dining and entertainment options. Women's days are Sunday, Wednesday and Friday -- gals can always head for an early facial or massage, relax in the baths and then dress up to go meet a hot date for dinner and jazz at the new SF Yoshi's.

Kabuki Springs is now owned by Joi de Vivre Hotels (same folks who own Hotel California where Millennium Restaurant is located). They are community-minded and support causes that embody California: Arts & Culture, Youth & Education, Environment, and Health & Wellness (http://www.jdvhotels.com/jdvgives/).

salt scrub at Kabuki Springs

A very relaxing environment in Japan Town, Kabuki has co-ed day (clothing not optional) on Tuesdays. Everything else alternates men or women every other day. You can get shiatsu, scrub yourself with salt in the steam room, drink the nice citrus or cucumber waters, cold plunge after a hot tub. This place is great when you need an hour or two of recharging in hot water, in a very tasteful, relaxing, and well-kept environment.
