I san see a lot of people have an opinion. KK stainless or Sigg Aluminum? I look for the solution that has the least potential health impact. Siggs are lined AL. There is a reason that they are lined. They are trying to avoid leaching and a metalic taste. Sigg claims thay have tested the lining and it is safe. So the problem that needs to be addressed. What if the lining is not safe? Once upon a time teflon was ok too. I personally am trying to avoid as much plastic as possible. The other thing- what happens when the lining fails.
So the easy solution is to buy a product that is not lined. The asnwer is the KK. The cost is about the same. When spending this much money I can't see why they would choose a product with more failure modes and potential risk. Sorry it is the engineer in me.
If you use the KK for camping then in a pinch you can heat it up also without melting. Something you can't do with the Sigg.

Klean Kanteen just came out with their Wide Mouth series and my local provider, Real Green Goods, in Concord NH, and also online, was right there to offer them. I got the 40 oz. size, it reminds me of the the uncontentious days with my Nalgene bottles. Same size bottle and mouth piece, great for my camping trips in the White Mountains. Fitting ice cubes in it are a cinch compared to the classic models, but the most important thing to me was the fact that I could clean it a lot easier. I would highly recommend Klean Kanteen products over, say Sigg, because stainless steel does not leach any harmful compounds, while I have read studies that the Sigg aluminum bottles have a plastic liner and still leach trace amounts of aluminum, a hard metal, which our bodies don't like. KK bottles are made RESPONSIBLY in China, which is all I can ask for at this point because they are the only country produces stainless steel products. Here is a link to the Wide Mouths for those that are interested: http://realgreengoods.com/proddetail.php?prod=WB009

As someone who has had some struggles transitioning to a sustainable life, I can say that Klean Kanteen is a really easy way to replace water bottles. We are constantly hearing how awful plastic water bottles are and how important it is to beat our addiction to them. Klean Kanteen is easy to refill and there is no taste. In the past I struggled with certain bottles because I could always taste the metal, but not with Klean Kanteen. It is made of stainless steel and is tasteless. Eliminating plastic water bottles is one of the most important things that must be done in order to help the environment, and this bottle really could contribute to that process. My only critique of this bottle is that it is difficult to carry it around when I am working out. It becomes heavy and challenging to open. Other then that one small problem, getting a Klean Kanteen is a great way to do your share in saving our environment.

I just love my KK. I've had mine since they first came out in 2005. I have the 40 oz, 27 oz and 12 oz sippy. I just lost my 40 oz and 27 oz so I'll be buying more. I also like the black carrier for the 40 oz. It helps me not loose it (or at least as often). They have held up well tops and body. I'm certain the bodies would have lasted me a lifetime if I hadn't lost them. No metalic taste and no issues with smell. I only use them for water and I empty the water daily and let dry (most of the time). I do rinse with diluted soap water on occasion (like if I forget it sitting around with water for a few days). I've also used other stainless water bottles and have had issues with plastic taste from the drinking cap or leaking from the cap. I've not had trouble with leaking from my KK or bad tastes (I'm chemically sensitive). Getting a KK is worth the extra cost.

I pretty much like my KK, except that I get a pretty foul smell from it some times. I only use it for water, and initially I didn't have this problem, but I have started noticing it about two months after my purchase. Does anyone else have any similar experiences? I wash my bottle with soap water once a week but the problem has still persisted.
Best,
A

I got rid of the odor in my KK by adding a little baking soda to the water (1/2 tsp.), swishing it around and leaving the baking soda-water in my KK for a day or so. Let me know if that solution works okay for you, too. more »
This really is a great product, I own several.
I must question, however the Klean Kanteen claims of being "environmentally friendly.”
Where does the steel that they use in their manufacturing come from?
Who is the third party that apparently inspects their Chinese manufacturers for adherence to environmental and social stewardship?
Who ships and distributes these products all the way from China?
Who are the owners of the company?
I cannot find the answers to any of these questions on their website. It is not enough anymore for companies to make these claims of environmental responsibility without providing proof!

I love my KK I have the 27 oz and the 40 oz. My children have the 18 oz. I take my KK everywhere. The water taste wonderful and I'm helping my body and the planet. The water stays cool and the ice fits in the opening. I have not had any problems with leaking or spillage. I bought the sleeves to go on the KK's this helps to protect the KK from damage if I drop it, my hands from the cold, it makes a great handle/holder and they look nice.

I love my Klean Kanteens. I don't know why some reviews say the colors chip. I have the 40oz. and 12oz in colors and neither one has chipped. The water tastes so clean and fresh. I prefer the stainless steel of the Klean Kanteen to the Sigg which is aluminum (which is reportedly not good for the brain). Klean Kanteens Rock!

New Baby Gift? Klean Kanteen Sippy Cup...
My new fave baby gift for my friends is the Klean Kanteen sippy cup. Never mind that they babies won't be able to use them for a year or so... My latest gift recipient says she will be the hippest mom in Eau Claire, Wisconsin!
I have my own 27 oz Klean Kanteen bottle, and I love it. No metallic taste, no plasticky taste, of course.... and no single-use water bottles.

Save your $, and buy the plain stainless. Paint chipped almost immediately under NORMAL usage. I contacted KK directly, and would not offer refund, gave me a song and dance. Buy Sigg!

My feeling about my Klean Kanteen is "meh" -- I like the fact that it is just straight up surgical stainless steel -- there's no metallic taste (I'm thinking folks with a lot of fillings are picking up on conductivity), there's no plastic to worry about and it can take hot stuff.
There are a number of design flaws that will virtually guarantee that I not acquire another one of these.
1. Flat bottom: every time the bottle hits the ground on the bottom or the edge of the bottom, it alters the shape and is no longer able to stand up right on a flat surface. I have pulled out tools to hammer it slightly flatter to fix this several times. Annoying.
2. Wide mouth: great for pouring not so great for drinking.
3. Sport cap design doesn't work: when you suck, it sucks back. It is noisy. It is also plastic -- so you can put wine in the Klean Kanteen but you'll have to boil or replace the plastic cap if it gets stinky. Yuck.
4. No handle: the cover on the sport spout looks like a handle but results in many tumbles (see #1).
I'm not interested in a Sigg with the mysterious undocumented secret ingredient liner. I would like something that has a nice concave bottom that would be less prone to getting bent out of shape when dropped, a bottle mouth that is easier for drinking, an improved sport cap or a cap that allows me to attach a D-clip.

I was hesitant to spend the money for the 40oz kanteen but I went for it and I'm happy I did. I have owned several Sigg bottles before and they are semi-durable but the aluminum gets dented much easier than steel. One advantage with the kanteen is that it has a wide mouth which makes cleaning easier than a sigg. The kanteen does have a slight metallic taste but I did the 1 TB white vinegar rinse that Mark G. suggested and found that it helped minimize it. I'd recommend it to a friend that wants to invest in a healthy and environmental friendly drinking container that will last a lifetime.

I have been using them exclusively for about 4 years now. I lose one periodically and have to order a new one. I accidentally left one on the Metro in DC today because I was rushing to see Indy Jones. A woman looked as I was pointing to my bottle as it went bye bye. This is the bottle that all other bottles are judged by. I like my Sigg and love the fact that it's made in Switzerland but I can't get past that "aluminum" bottle thing. I know their bottle is protected by a special ceramic coating but there is no way of telling if that coating is wearing away. With the Klean Kanteen you get just pure water. Oh, a tip I learned from a natural cleaning book about cleaning water bottles. Pour about 1 TB of white vinegar in your KK. Fill to neck with water. Screw on the cap, shake and rinse. The vinegar/water rinse will get rid of any "metal" taste you might notice. Still, I'd rather taste metal than plastic any day of the week. I hate "plastic water". Lastly, Klean Kanteen makes water bottles and water bottles only. They don't make evil "animal restraints" like Nalgene. That said, Klean Kanteen rules. Oh, and they've been certified nickel free too!

This bottle serves as an alternative to disposable water bottles that are detrimental to our planet's health and more dangerous choices that are manufactured with much more chemicals, many of which cause cancer when released by heat. The design is modern, functional, and perfect for both genders. I would strongly recommend the purchase of a Klean Kanteen!

Ok, they do not have Sigg's glamorous graphics, and they are made in China. But other than that these are the perfect water bottle.
They are food grade stainless and thus are healthy for you. They keep you from using the devilish plantet killing plastic water bottles. They add no taste to the water. They are recyclable at the end of their life.
Like I said, buy one, use one, tell people that you see drinking out of plastic to do the same

I received a Klean Kanteen as a gift and it is always with me. I suggest purchasing a sling and a sport drinking cap.
Cleaning is simple. I purchased one for my daughter, I think of it as an heirloom gift. I like the clean feeling when drinking from the kanteen, and I drink more water.

I love the Klean Kanteen. Let me count the ways:
1. It is sturdy and durable.
2. It is made from recycled content (most steel is)
3. It is attractive and sleek
4. It is easy to clean.
5. It does not leach anything nasty into my beverages.
6. It fits many cupholders perfectly.
Cons (removing one star for each con):
1. wide mouth opening results in spillage. Don't try drinking while a passenger in a car! I resolved this by purchasing a plastic sports cap lid. Downside of that is now my water is passing over plastic. Sigh.

Sorry but I CAN taste the metal aftertaste with the Klean Kanteen even though i sounds like most other people don't notice it. I prefer my Sigg water bottle since it has no metal taste. I also saw someone's comment about the wide mouth opening and I totally agree, I usually spill it especially if i use it while working out. If you are choosing between plastic and a Klean Kanteen then its definitely a good choice but looking at that boring silver bottle on my desk makes me feel like I am at Girl Scout camp or at some kind of military facility. At least with my Sigg, i get a nice splash of color, I don't spill all over myself and there is no aftertaste.

I love these bottles more than I can express. A friend recommended stainless steel and the difference between these and plastic bottles in amazing. The water tastes--and is--cleaner inside and the steel keeps the water colder much longer. I'm never going back to Nalgene!

My wife has one and loves it. I have one from Greenfeet and also love it (www.greenfeet.com). There are others out there and I don't know if anyone is better than the other. These are light weight and do a great job in keeping us away from plastics. Greenfeet claims to be made "responsibly in China." Don't know where the others are made or how.
