Over the years, people have introduced many plant species from other regions into their landscapes, some of which invade the natural environment.

Learning what plants to avoid when planting your garden is an important way to help keep the natural environment intact. Some exotic species are particularly invasive in certain areas. They reproduce aggressively and flourish at the expense of native plant and animal life.

A partial listing of these pesky outsiders to be avoided in Southern California is below:

Black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia)

English ivy (Hedera helix)

Fountain grass (Pennisetum setaceum)

German ivy (Delairea odorata)

Iceplant (Carpobrotus edulis)

Japanese honeysuckle (Lonicera japonica)

Pampas grass (Cortaderia selloana)

Pepper tree (Schinus molle)

Periwinkle (Vinca major)

Saltcedar or Tamarisk (Tamariz chinensis)

Spanish broom (Spartium junceum)

Tasmanian Blue Gum (Eucalyptus globulus)

Tree of Heaven (Ailanthus altissima)
