My son is the greatest impetus to change behaviors that I've been wanting to change but have been either too lazy, too flippant or just too non-committal. One of these behaviors is finally making use of the clothesline.
What You'll Need
- Thin rope or cord (about 1/8") long enough to reach across your yard and back. Start with about 60 feet.
- Two pulleys to run the cord through. Available at any hardware store...unless you get the complete clothesline/pulley package
- A couple of trees or posts to which you can connect the pulleys
- A small bag of clothes pins. (40)
- Sunshine
- Hooks to connect into the tree/post.
Instructions
Step 1: Track your sunshine for the best location that gets the most exposure.
Step 2: Screw in hooks/run cords around trees to hook in pulleys. Put it at about six feet off the ground, high enough so you can reach them without having to fall off a chair. Make sure there's no sag in the line otherwise you'll have dry clothes with dirt stains.
Step 3: Hook up the pulleys to your hooks/cords!
Step 4: Close that dryer forever, or at least until winter comes. Get out your pins and hang those clothes.
Step 5: Sun-fresh scent!

Sean M. says:
I live in a San Francisco 3rd floor flat with east facing windows in the washroom. So, since we get the wind every day around 3 pm our washroom acts like a dryer. So, I hung a few clothing rods above the washer and dryer and voilà, reduced our dryer needs dramatically. I think that anywhere with decent airflow would work fine if you don't have the space for installing a long clothes line.
