Smart marketing, cool stores... yes. Natural... not so much.

I put Lush in the same category as Method. They are a good company in terms of promoting being environmentally conscious, and they have better ingredients than conventional products, but they are still full of synthetics ingredients yet they hype how natural they are.
People seriously, you need to read labels unless you buy products based on their packaging only. There are plenty of fantastic truly natural and Eco-friendly products are out there regardless if you are motivated by being health conscious or Eco-conscious.

Love Lush

Very green company. At the store you don't need to place anything in a plastic bag, they have brown paper bags you can recycle. Many of their products are vegan and the company supports many good causes.

I've tested their bar shampoos which double as a soap and I loved it. Though I'm still more use to a liquid shampoo to be honest.

The best soap EVER!

Lush has been a favorite of mine since I discovered a shop in Whistler Village over 10 years ago. When they finally opened a store in the states I was thrilled. The Karma soap is my favorite soap and most of my friends and family have received a slice of it at some point. All of the products are amazing and the massage bars are a treat!

Lush is OK

I dunno about Lush's current products but I know personally people who've worked for the company. They treat their employees very well with bonuses. I've seen the organic saffron cases and other ingredients that go into their stuff with my own two eyes. Maybe they've changed since my friends left the company to move overseas but somehow I doubt it.

Lush is however for people who enjoy scents.

Lush makes the cut...

Ha! Get it? They cut off pieces of soap for you...

Seriously - I do like the scents of Lush products but find going into the stores to be a bit of an overwhelming experience.

Recently, I read a rave review of Lush's "Jungle" bar conditioner in a comment on someone's blog. I started off reading about reducing plastic consumption by going to bar shampoo and hair products so went to Lush to buy some of their stuff.

I love that Lush sells their stuff with little packaging -- though the bags they use were an issue in the past, but I was informed that all the bags are biodegradable, corn-based products. So, last May I bought some of the bar conditioner and shampoo, and a few other items. This morning someone posted a review on SustainLane about Lush and I thought, "Hey, I know they use natural scents in a lot of products." So, I looked up the products I purchased. Lo, and behold - SLS and SLES.

This morning I returned those products (shampoo, conditioner, bubble bar, and soap to Lush and they told me that in about a month, all the products will be SLS/SLES free!

Artificial fragrance abounds!

Everything contains cancer causing, brain numbing artificial fragrance. Anyone who considers this a green body care line is completely out of touch with reality.

More good than bad

NOTE: Original review was in January, revised in April.

I found out about Lush late last year, and I've been trying to decide what I think about them as a company.

I live close to an actual Lush store (Boulder, CO), although all of their products are also available online. Here's what their website says about their ingredients -- "LUSH's handmade cosmetics are made with fresh, organic fruit and vegetables, the finest essential oils, and safe synthetics."

First, let's talk about organic. Lush doesn't splatter the "organic" buzzword around as much as I would expect. They promote their products based for other reasons besides the fact that they use organic ingredients, which I appreciate.

Next, finest essential oils. That sounds good, but don't be misled as I was into thinking that the fragrances in their products are based on essential oils. Most are synthetic.

Last, safe synthetics. That's a tougher one. It turns out many of their ingredients are synthetic, such as parabens. I asked one of the local salespeople about parabens, and he gave a detailed response about his perspective on the history and concerns about parabens. Lush only uses parabens in their cosmetic products (i.e. not soaps and other solids) so that they can have an 18 month shelf life, and they only use as little as possible. They haven't found any alternatives that work as well. His opinion was that the current research doesn't prove that they are a health risk. I felt good about his response, although their use of parabens doesn't fit the "precautionary principle" for chemicals/synthethics. Lush also uses other synthetic ingredients (see fragrances above).

Also, Lush is strongly opposed to testing on animals, as their website attests.

One of the most appealing things to me is how little packaging they use for most of their products. The less plastic packaging, the better! In summary, while Lush may not be using only natural ingredients, they are doing several things right.

A marketing hoax

They sounded so great...small batches, organic ingredients -- but the rest of the ingredients are all chemicals! Lots of artificial colors and preservatives with one or two natural frangrances. They sell a marketing ploy -- not a sustainable product. Sigh.

Don't gush about lush

i'm pretty surprised to see all these great reviews about lush products. i initially thought they were all natural till i walked in the store one day. not only did i get really sick from the overwhelming smell, but after looking at all the artificial colors they use to make their products look pretty, i had a hard time buying into their spiel. nothing that natural has those colors.

i must admit, i was a bit grossed out by the fact that they sell you chunks of soap and products that have been touched by quite a few people. maybe that's a personal problem.

eventually i left. not more than a month later, i get a HUGE gift package. what was it?.... lush products! i giggled and figured i'd use it.

the hand lotion was really terrible smelling and i felt like i was a surfboard and it was my sex wax. the body wash smelled reallllly good, but full of parabens. ew.

LUSH-ciously Green

Lush is billed as a "cosmetics" company, but that's really from the standpoint that the best cosmetic is being happy...UK-based Lush has been a forerunner in earth-friendly, upscale bathing products, including bath bombs, lotions, facial care, deodorants, massage bars, fragrances, haircare, and of course, soap. Most products have minimal packaging, wrapping products in butcher paper rather than excess presentation. A majority of products are solid, reducing the need for preservatives ( water frequently breeds germs faster) and an added bonus when traveling ( no spillage, no hold up at airport security!) All products are veggie, most are vegan, all are cruelty free, and many contain fare-trade ingredients. With 3 locations in the city, one in oakbrook, and a new one due in Schaumburg this summer, there's no reason to deny yourself ( or the one you love) a fun, fresh, LUSH-ous bathing experience!

Fun and high quality

large variety of products and fun shopping experience. Bath bombs and Dream Cream are excellent and it's nice to know that the products are all handcrafted. Most of the products are even labeled with the person who made it and when.

Oooh... they smell so good!

Face masks so sweet-smelling that it's hard not to eat... shower jellies that make an interesting shower experience... scents that wake-up the body and mind... and NO ANIMAL TESTING! Great company... and the monthly (or maybe even more often) parties are fun to attend (not to mention - you get free gifts!)

Love their natural deodorant!

Try their deodorant creme -- smells like almonds and you feel great knowing you are not putting any aluminum of any kind into your body through your skin!

Lush Products

I'm a big fan of most lush products I try. My advice, though, is to make sure you buy them in person if smell is important. I have been surprised by some smells (that i thought would be good based on descriptions) that were sub-par. On the other hand i was delighted with other smells that i thought would be gross! That is why i usually do not buy anything online unless i have already bought it. Sometimes the expiration dates are too soon and i do not finish the products, so maybe i should just use them more often. I really love the fresh face masks (also with shorter expiration time) which you can only buy at the stores themselves.

Lovely...

Lush makes you feel lovely from the inside out. They make it easy to use their all natural products, with the expiration dates they provide on each container. The dusting powders have essential oils and shea butter that make perfume and lotion an unnecessary step.
