Michael Stoddard – Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Analyst
Community and Economic Development Department – Tacoma, WA
Start Date: June 2007

As a GIS analyst for the city of Tacoma, Washington, Michael collaborates with long range city planners to codify sustainable development patterns and designs. He crunches data and makes maps to communicate planning concepts and possible outcomes. He also assists local businesses as part of the city’s Economic Gardening program, which focuses on existing small businesses in the community. He uses GIS and demographic data to help companies make smart location and marketing decisions.

“I've always been fascinated by places,” says Michael. “Why are some vibrant and healthy, and others depressed? Why do some places like Davis Square in Somerville (MA) go from bleak to bustling?”

Michael began his career as a consultant on the development and application of a map-based decision support system for community and natural resource planners. He’s also worked as a residential and commercial properties assessor and as a GIS planner at a transportation planning firm.

“A common thread in my education and employment experience is technology, specifically maps and databases, applied to community planning and economic development,” says Michael. “In everything, I am guided by the question: Is it possible to turn places around, improving the quality of life for their inhabitants?”

Michael says he has a strong sense that he’s part of a larger movement toward a green economy.

“I plan for a built environment that promotes sustainable growth and development,” he says. “And I help local businesses grow, increasing the number of jobs in a residential center. This provides more opportunities for people to work closer to home and reduce the number of vehicle miles traveled. Living closer to work also means more quality time with families and loved ones.”

Michael has a bachelor’s degree in geography from Middlebury College.
