Microwave Ovens
by James E.
Microwave ovens destroy the nutrition in your food
Here's a great convenience of the 20th century...cook your dinner in 5 minutes flat. Unfortunately, in those 5 minutes, your microwave oven will destroy most or all of the nutritional value in your food, so you might as well skip dinner and go right to the TV. Making matters worse, if you are warming or pre-heating something in a plastic container, there is the strong possibility that the high heats achieved by the molecular disruption in your dinner will heat the plastic to such a degree that it could promote the leaking of chemicals from your plastic container right into your food. Throw away your microwave, and invite a friend over to cook a meal together, it can be fun and easy, and you'll get a chance to reconnect with yourself and others. Check out "The Slow Foods Movement" online. It was started in Italy and is making its way over here: www.slowfood.com. They have great food events too where you'll meet the most interesting people...try and make a gathering if you can!

I don't like the microwaves...
...but they are convenient and use far less energy than a natural gas stove would. Just a guess.
Who says that microwaves destroy all the nutrition in food? I haven't seen any studies, but they do make meat rubbery.
The people at cafe gratitude go even further, to not do any type of cooking. They only serve "raw food." If memory serves, they claim that cooking with any heat destroys food.
Our forebears cooked meat, because it was safer and/or tasted better.
Should we stop cooking over fire?
Moderation & Correct Use in Microwaving
There are certain times when you should not use a microwave, certain materials to use when heating your food and safety precautions.
1. DISHES IN THE MICROWAVE: By now, we should all be aware that plastics are not good in the microwave -- just switch to some nice pyrex dishes with lids -- or put your food on a paper towel with a dampened paper towel or sheet of waxed paper over it. Never use metal or ceramics not rated for microwave use. Metal can cause arcing and sparks and even fires. Using ceramics that aren't microwaveable could result in the dish cracking or breaking when heated.
2. SAFE COOKING: There are all kinds of stupid things you can do to cause food to superheat and blow up, overheat and scald the consumer and cause tremendous messes. Heat things at appropriate temperatures for the appropriate amount of time.
3. SAFE USAGE: If you have a really old microwave -- dispose of it properly. Most contemporary microwaves don't emit radiation, but to be safe - just stand 10-15 feet away from the thing while it is operating. Not a big deal.
MICROWAVES & NUTRITION: If you overcook anything, you will destroy the nutrition in it. There is a widely circulated study about how heating breast milk in a microwave destroys antibodies and warnings of scalding babies with overly hot milk -- just skip the microwave for breast milk.
The science isn't strong enough to prove one way or the other - check the studies on the effects of both positive and negative effects on the nutrient contents of food which has been microwaved on Wiki - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microwave_oven
