My favorite water wise plants

Meet my four favorite water wise plants. These California natives are growing in containers on my balcony and doing great! Follow the links to see photos and learn more about each plant.

Mexican Bush Sage (Salvia Leucantha)
Swooping grey green stems end in velvety purple flowers. Drought tolerant. Fast-growing to 3-5 feet high and about the same width.

Manzanita (Arctostaphylos 'Emerald Carpet')
Attractive low-growing ground-cover. Bright green, oval leaves, even in really hot weather.

Golden Current (Ribes aureum)
Tall-growing plant with light-green, rounded leaves. Has grown a foot in two months! Small, yellow flowers bloom in spring, followed by summer berries.

Deer Grass (Muhlenbergia rigens)
Lately, I'm seeing deer grass everywhere around Southern California, and no wonder. It is a modern-looking accent in a landscape that looks great and needs little water. It forms a tight, dense clump of tan and green thin leaves.
