I gave this product 3 starts because I think it's a fabulous idea. But I've tried it a few times now on 2 different drains with no luck. It didn't seem to impact my drain at all. Any other natural product recommendations so I don't actually have to call a plumber to come out would be great! I also will try out the plunger to see if it has any effect when I get home.
I've never used Drainbo, but I would bet that most of your clogs can be fixed with a plunger and elbow grease.

Alright - one comment here:
I ended up taking the drain plate off in my shower and plunging the drain. I'm not sure if the plunger did anything because I didn't poke around in the drain beforehand. But after plunging, I used a screwdriver (needed a long stick of an object) to remove basically a disgusting entire head of hair. Satisfied, I replaced the drain plate.
The drain ran fine. I can swear to you that no more hair went down the drain from that point forward, but within a few days, the drain was backed up again. And sadly -- with shame -- I admit, that I went for Draino. A charm.

Sorry guys -- it is with sadness that I update my previous review (see below). Sadness, and a little bit of shame for jumping the gun.
I used Drainbo once, then poured boiling water down the drain, then ran the water for several minutes, and it did not back up. I swear.
After one more Drainbo application (for good measure), I took a shower. Low and behold: backup. Much, much less backup than pre-Drainbo. But lots of backup nonetheless.
So I did one more Drainbo application. The final application meant I used an ENTIRE bottle of Drainbo on my drain. I just took a shower this morning: still the backup.
Maybe Drainbo doesn't eat through hair afterall? Maybe one more bottle? Or maybe I should switch to Liquid Plummr. Any ideas?

I read all the reviews on this site. And so it was with excitement and trepidation that I bought and tried Drainbo this past weekend to clear my shower drain!
It totally worked! I followed Daphne D's advice: I used double the amount of Drainbo, and in the morning I poured a big pot and a kettle of boiling water down the drain before flushing it with hot water for a couple minutes. My drain's now clear.
I'll keep following Daphne's advice and do one more application tonight, to be sure.

Really want to thank all of you for your comments. I took them with me to the World Market when, in front of the drain cleansers, a woman asked me if I knew anything about Drainbo. I was a fountain of information but... more »
I had been noticing a slow but steady stream of little black flying insects in my home, and from some online research was able to discern that they were called drain flies. They lay eggs in the crud inside drains. Killing these dumb (slow reflexed ;) bugs one at a time didn't seem to do the trick, so one day when I was at Whole Foods I bought a bottle of Drainbo. (yes, funny name!) I followed the directions on the bottle for diluting in warm water, poured Drainbo in my kitchen sink, bathroom sink & tub, avoided using the drains as long as possible since it says to leave overnight, and POOF! I haven't seen another drain fly!
I generally like to avoid using any chemical drain cleaners, even if green, because if grease is the problem it will just re-coagulate further down the line and can potentially cause sewage backups elsewhere. It's best to have a plumber clean the pipes the old fashioned way, but as a one time thing this worked great.

I have drainflies! I didn't know what they were. I didn't understand how I had fruit flies in my drain. Or maybe fruit flies are the same thing? more »
I had a very slow drain-- not fully clogged, but very slow-- in a bathroom sink. Tried other products first (the roto-rooter recommended enzyme) and didn't work at all. Before bringing the plumber in, decided to try Drainbo. Just to give it a fair chance, I used MUCH more than recommended-- I think -3 cups of drainbo in 3 quarts of warm water. I did follow instructions, and let it sit 15 minutes to "activate" the microbes. Poured it down the drain, and let it sit overnight. In the morning, boiled up a huge pot of water for the morning-after flush. Poured several gallons of BOILING water down the drain. The drain sort of hiccuped and cleared!! Kept running the hottest water possible for several minutes, just to clean things out. It was fantastic. Did it one more night, just to be sure to process everything, and the drain is now running just like it did when first installed!
I think the key is to use enough of this stuff to give the microbes a chance, and to make the morning flush long and very very hot. I will keep some of this on hand all the time, just as insurance. I think this was 7 or 8 bucks at Whole Foods, and since it works, that is reasonable. I am VERY VERY happy with how this worked!

Daphne -- thanks so much for your review! I've been following it to a T and have met great success! more »
This product seems like a great idea. It uses natural microbes to eat away gunk in your drains. Cool. It smells like fragrant flowers. Ahhh. But can it clear a drain for me? Sadly, the answer is not yet. I've tried it on two separate occasions and it has failed miserably both times. Perhaps it might be good for maintaining a drain once it has been cleared, but I can't say that it seems to effective on clogged drains. I'd love to hear a success story if there's one out there!
Drainbo works fairly well -- still, it doesn't do the job of its more unnatural counterparts, which I refuse to buy anyway, since they go directly into the groundwater. It's got microbes that supposedly digest buildup and help you keep in place your drainage, maintenance-wise. The name cracks me up. The price is pretty good and it's non-GMO.

This stuff is easy and cleans you pipes. It is biodegradable. It's nice to know that unclogging drains and maintaining the 'health' of your pipes and drains can be done in a green way. If you've been using bleach to do this, try this product, you'll love it!
