Address map 398 San Pablo AveAt first I was thrilled to find a green cleaners so close to home. I didn't mind paying the price, slightly higher than conventional cleaners, to protect the environment & my health. True, most clothes came back fine, but a few pieces came back faded. Every time it happened I thought it was my imagination (my fault, I know!), so I kept using them. First a teal-colored, down-filled throw came back more denim-colored. A spring-green cashmere sweater looked faded when I picked it up, & again I wasn't sure of what I *thought* I might've been seeing. There was a pink wool sweater that I'm still not sure about-I think it might've been a clearer pink when I bought it.The last time was when I took in a favorite tomato-red cotton/linen sweater. I'd heard that it wasn't safe to dry-clean cotton, so I asked the very friendly employee if it was safe to have the sweater cleaned. Instead of saying that they couldn't guarantee the results or that she just plain didn't know, she said they had a man who used a water-wash method by hand. My every subsequent inquiry was answered with some variation of, "My sweaters always come out very soft, and they smell wonderful." I must have asked about fading problems 3 or 4 more times, and each time it was, "My sweaters always come back so soft!" or whatever. I have MS & my attempts at clear cognition can get overwhelmed by the smallest thing; when that happens my thinking gets really fuzzy & illogical. This happened during that exchange, so instead of saying, "I'm sorry, but if you can't give me a clear 'yes,' I'm not leaving my sweater here," I gave her my favorite sweater. Gawd, how I loved its beautiful ripe-tomato color, its ribbed waist, its diamond-shaped cut-outs, its $20 ebay price for a designer sweater that would have cost $85 at Needless Markup! Now I want to cry every time I look at its muted redness. So sad that it took that to finally wake me up. No Norge no more.

Just a few years ago it was impossible to find a dry cleaner who didn't use perc - a nasty chemical that definitely doesn't belong on or in our bodies. Norge was one of the first neighborhood cleaners to take on "wet" cleaning. It's a bit more expensive, and it does take an extra day or so, but they pick-up your stuff and drop it home to you (saving everyone time on the road, which is Co2 in the air). Plus these folks are good people and I believe it is family owned, as I tend to see several family members in there whenever I go. The new way of non-toxic dry cleaning is also way kinder on your clothes, not to mention the environment. I notice my shirts don't get dissolved in the process...less trips to the mall to buy new stuff :-)
If you've not tried "wet" cleaning, give it a whirl, you won't go back!
