About six months ago, I was in need of a new pillow. After watching "The Story of Stuff" online and seeing that many pillows are dipped in flame retardant (a neurotoxin), I started looking for a more natural pillow. I found Serenity Pillows through Co-op America's Green Pages (www.greenpages.org).
Serenity Pillows makes a variety of pillows out of natural ingredients: buckwheat hulls, millet, wool batting, and organic cotton. All of that sounded better to me than your average cheap polyester-filled pillow. Using the company's website as a guide, I went with the Rejuvenation Pillow because I sleep mainly on my side. The Rejuvenation is a full-size pillow with a bottom chamber filled with buckwheat hulls and a top chamber filled with a layer of wool batting. The pillow can be adjusted by removing some of the hulls or batting.
If you're used to cozying up to a soft, squishy pillow, most Serenity pillows don't deliver in that area. The Rejuvenation pillow is heavy compared to any other pillow I've used. That seems to be a good thing, though, because it provides much more stability and support for my head while I sleep.
I had slept with a small buckwheat pillow before and I liked the support, but buckwheat can be a little "hard on the head" if you sleep on it all night long. The Rejuvenation pillow's full size and wool batting help make it a lot more comfortable and supportive.
There are some challenges with the pillow. The wool batting is only on one side, so you can't flip the pillow and use the other side unless you don't mind resting directly on buckwheat. That tends to make my ear sore when I sleep on my side. Also, if you have broad shoulders like I do, it's a little difficult to bulk up the pillow enough to provide support that stays put.
All in all I'm happy with my pillow, and I feel much better about the materials used to make it. Although it doesn't provide the ultimate in sleepy-headed comfort, I haven't found anything that works better.
