Too smokey for me

I've only ever tried Mate in the brewed tea form. Have I been missing this strong smokey flavor? I never noticed it in my Traditional Medicinals brewed tea. It's always tasted great and sort of mellow like Rooibos tea. I was so glad to see this organic bottled version that I bought 2 flavors, traditional and raspberry. Both tasted good just until my tastebuds met the smokey notes. Ick, it's almost bitter. Maybe mine was a bad, over-steeped batch, or that is how it really tastes and my tea bags are weak? I love the health benefits of mate and hope to try other flavors. Their website also now features free music, via their audio player download. I haven't tried this yet, but who doesn't love free and legal music?
