Holiday Celebrations at the Market begins November 24th with a food drive, carolers, tree lighting and crafts for kids. Having lived in Seattle for 20 years, Pike Place Public Market was my favorite destination to enjoy the pulse of life during the holidays, and search out produce, food products, gifts and wares of every kind.
Stepping into the market this past weekend, was a seamless transition back into any market day I can remember...the crush of people, the salty organic smells and aromas of seafood and fresh baked breads, the many vendor's faces and voices calling out into the crowd... interwoven with the haunting notes of the Andean wooden flute, blues guitar riffs coming from under the stairs, and the corner pianist's cross-cultural infusion rippling up and down his keyboard. During the holidays, there is much good will toward all at the Pike Place Market.

I went here with low expectations because of all the hype. When I went last Sunday, it was touristy like Union Square in SF, and pricey, but worth the trip.
Pike Place is comprised almost exclusively of locally-owned, owner-operated small businesses offering a wonderful selection of food, flowers, arts and crafts. While the main draw is fresh seafood there is plenty more to see and eat.
I really liked Beecher's natural, hand-made cheeses for instance. It was nice to see the first Starbucks (one of the exceptions as far as locally-owned small businesses go), but I am not a fan of chain stores. The Russian Piroshky place filled me up just with the smell of cheese pastries! It's a really good spot to check out. Would be better without car traffic on the main pedestrian thoroughfare.
A little bit of everything wrapped up into one and it's in Seattle. It doesn't get much better than that. To name a little of what you might find; vintage shops, fish throwing, a crepe restaurant, fresh flowers and foods (locally grown). It's an amazing place to visit and an en even better place to live close to.
